We
aim to provide the children with skills, knowledge, understanding, critical
awareness and a positive attitude to learning. All planned classroom work includes
the requirements of the National Curriculum for all subjects. Language Development and Literacy (English) Talking, reading, listening, writing. Children from Year 1 to Year 6 are taught the National Literacy Strategy. Our own reading scheme is based upon good children's books, the children's own interests and a range of commercially produced books. Our main resource is "The Oxford Reading Tree Scheme". Our reading scheme is updated annually. We believe reading is about gaining meaning, pleasure and information from texts. It is the key that opens the doors to a child's education. We aim to encourage children to see reading as a worth while and meaningful experience. We use a variety of approaches to teaching reading including phonics. The children are encouraged to develop library and study skills. Classes visit the local library and borrow books of their own choice. Our aim in developing children's writing is to enable them to write for a variety of audiences. (Readers/listeners) It is important for children to see themselves as writers. We use a variety of approaches, for example, younger children take part in 'shared writing'. The teacher will write publicly with a class or group. Older children take part in 'writers workshops' they are encouraged to draft, redraft and publish their writing in books or for display. In these ways children see the importance of writing legibly, spelling words correctly and making sense. Punctuation, spelling and grammar are taught according to the child's ability and needs within the requirements of the National Literacy Hour. We encourage joined handwriting throughout the infant and junior classes. We use a number of approaches to teaching spelling including the 'look, say, cover, write' method, word lists and spelling logs. Home School Reading Partnerships Children and parents enjoying reading. Every child who begins nursery or reception is given a reading record and information booklet for parents. Regular reading at home is a vital part of children becoming good readers. Book bags can be purchased from the school office. Curriculum: << previous page | next page >> |
