Reading and Phonics

At Randal Cremer, we recognise there are several different factors that contribute to a child learning to read.  Our goal is that pupils will leave Randal Cremer able to read with fluency, understanding and enjoyment and that they will be able to write for a range of audiences grammatically and with purpose.

Our pupils learn to read and write effectively and quickly using the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme, through EYFS and KS1 using phonetically decodable books.

Reading in KS1 is then complemented using Daily Supported Reading which gives our children the rich story language, wider reading knowledge and more reading mileage.

Once children read with a level of fluency, we introduce Jane Considine’s Hooked on Books approach to reading.

The children discuss their reading through Book Talk and shared reading at their level. They look at different aspects of reading to enable them to have a full understanding of their texts; the character senses through lenses called the FANTASTICs, the STYLISTICs showing the character journey through a text and the ANALYTICS showing the writers tools and skills needed to write effectively.

Reading Rainbow

Writing throughout the school is taught through Jane Considine’s The Write Stuff. This approach teaches children the techniques of an author and how to hone and craft quality sentences and paragraphs into a whole piece of writing.

This supports the oracy development of our children as they learn vocabulary that enhances writing and is the best choice of words to put together to make sense.
